The Ilgaz 15 July Independence Tunnel, inaugurated on December 26, 2016, consists of twin tubes with lengths of 5,488 meters and 5,480 meters.
One of the most significant tunnel projects implemented nationwide, the Ilgaz 15 July Independence Tunnel, has reduced the road altitude from 1,850 meters to 1,390 meters. It provides high-standard and safe transportation year-round through the once daunting Ilgaz Mountain pass, which was a nightmare for drivers during the winter months.
The previously 17-kilometer Ilgaz Mountain Pass, which used to take 34 minutes, has been shortened by 5.6 kilometers, allowing it to be crossed in just 8 minutes. The 2.5-hour journey between Kastamonu and Çankırı can now be completed in 1.5 hours.
